Biography

Born in Dallas, Texas on March 17, 1953, the son of a hard working blue collar father, Virgil L. Rogers who had creative skills and liked to sketch in pencil and make sculptor pieces from clay and his mother: 

Francis Belle Scott, a decendant of the famed  Sir Walter Scott.


V. Les grew up just three miles from downtown in an area know as the
"M Streets".  His mother exposed him to cultural influences early on; His father worked weekends but his mother would take him to museums on Sundays.


  • Early influences as a teen were the early modernist likePablo Picasso with his bold colors and irregular shapes.
  • "L Homme Infini" by Man Ray left an impression on the young artist.
  • The bright colors of Joan Miro
  • The rounded  and simple - yet profound shapes of famed Georges Braque
  • Arthur Dove and Marcet Duchamps "Dulcinea"
  • Like many teen artists he likes the work of Edvard Munchas well.

  • Bold primary colors became a part of his signature style.

The Artists'  Signature:

The artist uses his first  initial:    " V "    

 to honor the memory of his father  VIRGIL  LEE  ROGERS

 and  his middle  name   " Les "                    

 instead of the typical last name signature.

V. Les  Rogers

is considered

one of the top living

self taught  Texas artist

residing in  Houston,Texas.

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas

he was Influenced by the styles of Expressionism' and in the mid 1970's, at the age of 20, he was drawn to Modern Neo-Expressionism; drawn to the style of its textured and expressive brush strokes and knife work; as well as the vivid and violent colors that were used.

By conscious or unconscious decision many of his primal images often portrayed in silouette black sprawled awkwardly across the canvas and conceived in  heavy handed brush strokes lays bare his impulse to illustrate a life lived in bold colors with no despair and no remorse.  It is that spirit that V. Les Rogers captures in his work
